Coordinating Conjuctions

Definition:
Coordinating conjunction is a conjunction that links two words, phrases, clauses, or sentences that are grammatically equivalent. 

The six words most commonly used as coordinating conjunctions can be remembered as: (F)or, (A)nd, (N)or, (B)ut, (O)r, (Y)et, (S)o.

1  Use of  "And"

And is used as a conjunction when the words or phrases are of equal importance and both condition exist.
There are three points :
- When  and connects only two items within a sentences, No  Commas are used.
- When and connects three or more items in a series in a sentences , commas are used.
- When and connects two sentences, a comma is usually used.


a.    I saw a cat and a mouse.
b.    I saw a cat, a mouse, and a rat.
I saw a cat, a mouse, a rat, and a dog


c.  I opened the door and walked into the  room.
d.   I opened the door, walked into theroom, and sat down at my desk.



e.    Their flag is green and black.

f.     Their flag is green, black, and yellow


g.  I opened the door. She opened the window.
h.      (Incorrect) :
I opened the door, she opened the window.


i.        I opened the door, and she opened the window.
In a : and connects two noun : cat + mouse = No Commas
In b : and connects three or more nouns, so commas are used.

In c : No commas are used because and connects only two verbs (opened + walked)
In d : Commas are used because and connects three verbs (opened + walked + sat)

In e : and connects two adjectives, so No Commas
In f : and connects three adjectives, so commas are used.

In g : Two complete sentences (also called independent clauses) are separated by period , NOT a comma.
In h : h is incorrect because it has a comma between the two independent clauses.

In i : When and connects two independent clauses, a comma is usually used

  
2. But

The conjunction "But" is used to show a contradiction between two phrases.
But are used in the same ways as and, but also are used commas when connects  two independent sentences

 Example :
 a. I went to bed, but couldn't sleep.
 b. I dropped the vase, but it didnt break.
     In b : but used commas when connects two complete sentences.
     (I dropped the vase = a complete sentence) (It didn't break = a complete sentence)


3. Or

When we need to express a choice between two words or phrases, we use "or". Here only one of two conditions exists. Or are used in the same ways as and.

Example:
a. Is a lemon sweet or sour?
b. Do we class on Monday , or is Monday a holiday?
c. Sit on the brench or on the grass
